    Matt. I’m using Google Chrome as browser but cannot load videos.

    Any suggerstions?



    Hi all. DIY’er here, gear cutter is my real job description. Joined to learn more about AC operation and diagnosis among other things. Been following Matt on YouTube for some time and just migrated over. Having some issues with an AC system. Questions to follow.



    Derick here. An electronics technician by trade, but I grew up on a farm and have had to fix nearly everything. That continued in the US Navy where the rating “ET” (electronics technician) was called “everything technician” and took on other meanings not so kind. 😉

    At present, I am an electromechanical tech working on an automated people mover at SEATAC airport. You may have ridden on our underground train as you were passing through. The public name for it is the Satellite Train System.

    I am rather fond of cars of the VW persuasion. Which means I possibly have a masochistic personality disorder worthy of treatment. I also love the smell of diesel fuel in the morning. I get excited when I can actually, truthfully and financially justify buying an expensive tool. These are things not to mention in a dating profile, but I hope they are acceptable here.

    Due to a hormonal outburst in younger years, I have spawn that needs car repair on a regular basis. So there’s that. I will leave it at that.

    Matt, your troubleshooting technique is first rate. No one has a monopoly on knowledge and even after 40 years of diagnostic “bliss”, it is helpful to watch anothers approach. Plus, it is nice to see someone else figure it out for a change while I sit on middle-aged flat arse… 🙂

    I’m Mainoo and I’m joining from Lisbon, Portugal. A week ago I got ripped off buying a car because i substituted trust in the seller for knowledge. I have been reading non-stop about cars and fixing them since and came across Matt’s Youtube channel – I’m watching those videos now instead of the Wimbledon final – i’m hooked. Steep learning curve and he makes it so easy!

    I have little interest in getting my hands really dirty but I do have an interest in knowing as much (if not more) about car diagnostics and repair than the mechanic I am going to (and I’d like to do as much practical work as necessary to ensure that is the case). And, of course, when i next buy a used car (i love Peugeot and Citroen cars), i’ll know what i am doing. I even have a germ of an idea for running a garage where we pay for any mis-diagnoses from our own pockets (where have you heard that before?) – with the way the general public feels about mechanics, it would be a surefire business model.

    By the way, Matt what does one enter as postcode in the payment dialog (my card is registered to a UK postcode)?


    HI Matt. I feel compelled to write this tonight after having successfully diagnosed the problem with my brake lights not working. Admittedly not a big deal, but it was the first time I really utilized your methods of thinking and not just doing.
    I am a 66 year old Radiologist from Upstate Ny. After interpreting complex medical imaging for almost 40 years, my mind has passionately changed direction towards diagnosing and repairing automobiles for unexplainable reasons.
    Yesterday I took my newly purchased 91 Civic Si Hatch with 250k miles to be inspected. My mechanic noted the brake lights weren’t working. He looked up the wiring diagram. The fuse was ok so he tested the two wires to the brake pedal switch. One was hot and the other wasn’t, even when he depressed the pedal. He told me to go get a new switch and come back.
    When I got home I realized this was my change to use what I’ve learned on your videos. I looked up the circuit and found it’s switched to ground. The ground it connects to also grounds other functions that were working fine.
    I jumped across the two wires to the switch and no lights! I knew that meant it wasn’t the switch. Just to be sure (as you do) I pulled the switch and checked for continuity. Sure enough the switch had appropriate continuity when depressed.
    So I knew it wasn’t the switched. I trace the wire coming out of the switch and it led to a hack connection that had fallen apart. Voila! Fixed without a parts change.
    Thanks so much for your time and effort in teaching idiots like me to become thinking mechanics. I would only reinforce your admonition to DO IT, don’t just watch. Im sure that, as with medicine, experience is essential in addition to knowledge in becoming an expert.


    Hi Matt and Everyone! I’m an old shade tree mechanic. I’ve worked on cars, trucks and everything else (jack-of-all trades) for over 50 years. It was either fix it or junk it, build it or do without! In most cases I had little to lose and lots to gain by doing it myself. I began long before the wealth of knowledge provided by computers, the internet and you-tube. I worked for 37 years as a full-time firefighter. Like most firefighters I worked on the side at multiple jobs to make ends meet. At the firehouse I was often asked by other firefighters to help them fix their cars, trucks, lawnmowers, snowblowers, design the addition to their house and help them build it. When I retired I finally managed to build myself a garage with a two-post lift. It sure beats changing out clutches while laying on the ground. I’ve often changed out parts on a hunch that the part may be the culprit. Even when I was wrong the final cost was always less than it would have been if I had paid someone else to do it. In addition I gained knowledge and experience to deal with the next challenge. I don’t watch too many auto repair videos. I tend to look for information that may be helpful for a current project. But I really need to make an effort to expand my knowledge of the use of diagnostic tools and methods, if for no other reason than to shorten the time to finding a solution to a problem.


    Hello all. My name is Bill. I worked as a welding fabricator and a machinist for over 30 years before it got the best of me physically. I’ve always tried to do all of my own repair work, and as I usually kept older vehicles (67-88, it wasn’t much of a problem. After I became physically incapable of working, my wife decided to get a newer car. We wound up finding a 2002 Toyota Highlander, that had just been traded in. Even though it was 10 years old, it was in immaculate condition, above, below and inside. It was hard to tell it wasn’t new, unless you looked closely at the plastic trim inside, which shows wear earliest. Drove the car for 7 years with no problems other than regular service. I couldn’t have been happier, as I had heard newer cars were finnicky.
    At 200,000, the water pump called it quits, and as the timing belt had not to my knowledge been replaced, I was advised to replace the whole timing set by the garage, then given an estimate that sounded more like college tuition than a repair. I thanked them kindly and got a friend to help me. I turned to YouTube, and quickly became discouraged with the quality of some of the work I saw. Then I stumbled on Shrodingers Box. A beautiful 3 part video of precisely my predicament popped right up, and with only my friend to help me with the physical part that I was unable to do, the replacement went flawlessly. Awesome talent in that mind sir, I hope I can absorb some of it. No problems since then. I am currently working through your fuel trims at the moment, and look forward to tackling that next. Was thrilled to see you had put up a site for educating the willing (read desperately broke DIY fanatic)

    I have always enjoyed wrenching on cars and anything else in my spare time .

    34 years old. 9 years on wallstreet has left me very unfulfilled in life. Starting a new career. Have always had a love of cars, working on them, and the like. Enjoy doing things with my hands including wood work, turning wrenches, and designing. 2 small children. Clemson University graduate. Love learning new things and look forward to making some good friends on here and learning as much as possible. Will sit back and listen for the most part as I consider myself a super novice although I am able to do much more than the average Joe.

    Hello Matt and all other 2%ers (Matt we need to review this figure it could be as low as 0.2% here in Africa). My name is Ivan and I live in Uganda. I am an environmental engineer and I specialise in Pollution Control. I dabble in vehicle diagnostics in my spare time (mostly weekends). I have been involved with vehicle diagnostics for about 5 years now. During the last couple of years I have watched almost all Matt’s youtube videos. I am here to learn even more.


    Happy to be here around the box. I’m from Philadelphia, Pa. area of Norristown. 61 yr. old fart who looks to learn still after forty years in the trade.


    Gonna try again. Chris…Texas grandma…initially excited…very excited and relieved to find the information provided in these videos. Still hoping to confirm that I will be able to trust the actual humans behind it. Forgive me…I’m more than a little hesitant to trust anyone I can’t look in the eye and reach out and touch or at least reach on the phone…with any of my information.

    Time is of the essence guys! I’ve been struggling to get my car inspected for MONTHS. The check engine light wasn’t on until after the first time it didn’t pass inspection!? I really want to communicate with…I am guessing…“Matt”.

    Please confirm receipt ASAP. Oh yea…TAGS?
